For the past seven weeks, Scott called Manchester Airport and the train station his home. Not because he wanted to, but because he had nowhere else to go. After experiencing violence in the city centre and having most of his possessions stolen, these places felt safer—brightly lit, with people around, and at least some sense of security.

Each day was a battle against the cold. Scott would wander the city, searching for warmth wherever he could find it. Libraries became his refuge, offering a few hours of shelter from the biting wind outside. But when night fell, he returned to the airport or station, bracing himself for another night on hard floors and freezing air.

We began supporting Scott during this time, first by helping him access a free SIM card through the national Data Bank initiative. It was a small step, but it meant he could stay connected, reach out for help, and begin to rebuild.

Then came a turning point. After assessments, we drove Scott to Emmaus Mossley, a charity that offers more than just a roof over someone’s head. Emmaus provides a home, companionship, and meaningful work opportunities through their social enterprise. It’s a place where people who have experienced homelessness can regain stability, rebuild confidence, and start again.

The meeting at Emmaus was full of hope. Scott’s assessment went well, and for the first time in weeks, there was a real possibility of change. Yet, as we drove him back to Manchester Airport that evening, the contrast was heartbreaking. We had just left a place filled with warmth, community, and opportunity—only to drop him off knowing he would spend another night sleeping rough in the freezing cold.

The very next day, the phone rang. It was Emmaus. Scott had been offered a space.

That call changed everything. Within a week, Scott would move into safe accommodation, join a supportive community, and begin building a pathway towards employment and independence.

Scott’s journey is a powerful reminder of both the harsh realities of homelessness and the incredible impact of compassion and practical support. From the cold floors of an airport to the welcoming community of Emmaus Mossley, his story shows what’s possible when people come together to offer hope.

We are proud to have walked alongside Scott during this difficult chapter, and even prouder to see him take his first steps into a brighter future
